A specialist resource for elder fraud

The U.S. Department of Justice's National Elder Fraud Hotline is a free resource for fraud affecting people age 60 or older. Call 833-372-8311. Its published hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern Time.

The hotline helps people navigate reporting and connect with other resources. Check its official page for current information. For immediate danger in the United States, call 911.

Make room for an honest conversation

Try 'Would you like help checking this message?' rather than assuming the person cannot make decisions. Ask whether there is an urgent demand, a transfer of money, or someone requesting private information.

Help locate an official contact number independently. A caller's name, logo, or confident tone does not establish who they are. Keep the person's preferences and independence central as you work through options.

Be cautious about follow-up claims

The National Elder Fraud Hotline warns that scammers have impersonated its staff and used threats to seek money or personal information. Do not provide sensitive information in response to those claims; use the hotline's official contact details.
